Soul Steps was founded in 2005 by step artist Maxine Lyle in hopes of disseminating an awareness of step dance beyond a collegiate environment. Our mission is to expand the presence of stepping in the arts and entertainment industries while creating avenues for cultural exchange and awareness among diverse communities. We specialize in the live performance, artistic instruction, and educational outreach of African-based step dance.
Soul Steps reaches far beyond conventional boundaries and concentrates on the body as a percussive, story-telling instrument. Performances include the personal and cultural stories of the Soul Steps artists and the generations of ancestors they represent. Soul Steppers have traveled throughout the Northeast wowing audiences from state to state.

Through performances at schools, we have shared the beauty of step with students, faculty and teachers alike. Our shows have been performed in the heart of New York City, Times Square. Our credits include a three night sold out show in the 2007 New York Musical Theater Festival, an NPR radio soundtrack for "Waafrika", an inspirational African play regarding tribal life and cultural changes by playwright Nick Mwaluko, and numerous workshops with collegiate step teams, school assemblies, and corporate events.
Our performance is a sincere reflection of who we are, and in a spirit of honesty we invite audiences to join us in the celebration, discovery, and growth that are birthed through the dance. Step is built on the tradition of exchange and therefore the audience is an integral part of the performance. We hope to broaden perceptions regarding the dynamics of this art form, and welcome our audiences to the fellowship of performers who share a passion for this craft. We invite you to join us on this journey.
